The Best Foods to Donate for Older Adults

Increasingly, seniors whose fixed incomes have not kept pace with rising prices are seeking food assistance from Food Assistance, Inc. ~ Groceries on Wheels. Our commitment is to helping address the nutritional needs of struggling seniors and you can help. Use this guide when selecting foods to donate to FAI benefiting older adults.

Choose canned lean meats as a good source of low-fat protein and canned or dry beans as a good source of fiber.

Oils / Other

Coconut oil, olive oil, macadamia oil, avocado oil, and grass-fed butter, all of which are MUCH healthier than vegetable oils and don't cause the many problems of vegetables oils.

Choose non-perishable whole grains as a first ingredient for maximum nutritional value.

Choose canned or dry fruits and vegetables in an array of colors to provide a variety of vitamins and minerals.

Fruits & Veggies

Fruits / vegetables with skins (dried or whole) Low-sodium, no salt added canned vegetables Shelf-stable fruit cups in their own juice

Spices & Condiments

Donate dry, ground herbs and spices whenever possible.  By donating spices you help enable pantry clients to flavor their food without a lot of added salt.
